Mrs. Emily Hester from LSU’s student financial management center came speak to us about the financial services LSU offers to its students. Her presentation was a very well prepared PowerPoint, which overviewed what the SFMC offers, improvements to the SFMC, and the future of the SFMC.
She explained to us that the SFMC is in place to provide financial literacy education through campus outreach, to evaluate student needs and provide education, to empower students through financial education, to make available resources to LSU students to help them make healthy financial decisions, and to educate the faculty and staff about opportunities for collaboration through the SFMC. Student outreach is achieved through seminars held at freshman orientations, Greek life, student organizations, and many more. Students are invited to visit the SFMC for one-on-one appointments where students can expect to receive aid in their personal budgets, money management, student debt, and credit cards. Other resources such as downloadable budgets, calculators, and news articles are available through the SFMC’s website which is www.sfmc.lsu.edu.
The student financial management center began in 2009 and has come a very long way. The first thing they concerned themselves with was preparing a website where students can access information regarding student finances. Another important step they took was to establish one-on-one student relationship through appointments. This allows the SFMC to really help students with their finances. Their most recent improvement to the SFMC was implementing Buttonwood, which is an online tool to help first year and transfer students combat the dramatic rise in student loan defaults in the US.
The last thing she spoke about was the future of the student financial management center. The SFMC is moving into the LSU bookstore and will have many updated amenities for students to take advantage of. The center will include a ticker, bar tops, iPads, and much more.
Mrs. Hester seems very passionate about what she does. She specifically stated that she could speak all day and still not be able to tell us everything about the student financial management center.
I find the SFMC website to be a very helpful tool for all students. I think that it is a wonderful asset to LSU. I think the most useful tool on their website is the downloadable budgets. I feel as though Mrs. Hester addressed any questions we might have and I certainly suggest she speak to future classes.
